Why We Choose Organic: The MIKA & MILO Story

Every brand has a reason it exists. For MIKA & MILO, that reason is simple to state and deeply felt: children deserve clothing that is genuinely good for them — good for their skin, good for their comfort, and good for the world they're growing up in.

This is the story of why we choose organic, and what that choice means in practice.

Where It Starts: The Fabric

Everything at MIKA & MILO begins with material. Before design, before colour, before silhouette — the question we ask is: what should this be made from?

The answer, consistently, is our 95% organic cotton, 5% cashmere blend. This isn't a formula we arrived at by accident. It's the result of thinking carefully about what children's clothing actually needs to do: be soft enough for sensitive skin, breathable enough for active days, durable enough to outlast a season, and gentle enough to feel good from morning to bedtime.

Organic cotton and cashmere, in this precise combination, delivers all of that. No synthetic fibre comes close.

Why Organic, Specifically

Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops in the world. The pesticides and herbicides used to grow it, and the chemical treatments used to process it, leave residues that persist into the finished fabric. For children — whose skin is thinner and more permeable than adults', and whose bodies are still developing — this matters in ways that are easy to overlook and hard to ignore once you know.

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or herbicides, and certified organic textiles (we look for GOTS certification) are processed without the harsh chemical treatments that conventional cotton relies on. The result is a fabric that is cleaner, softer, and genuinely safer for children's skin.

It also means less damage to the soil, the waterways, and the farming communities that grow it. Choosing organic is a choice that ripples outward in ways that matter.

Why Cashmere

The 5% cashmere in our blend is not a marketing detail. It's what makes the fabric feel the way it does — that immediate softness when you touch it, the way it sits against skin without any roughness or friction. Cashmere fibres are extraordinarily fine, and unlike wool, they don't scratch or irritate. Children who struggle with conventional knitwear almost always wear ours comfortably.

We source our cashmere responsibly, with attention to the welfare of the animals and the livelihoods of the herding communities in Inner Mongolia who produce it. Quality and ethics are not in tension here — the best cashmere comes from the most responsibly managed herds.

Why This Blend Doesn't Pill

One of the practical advantages of our 95/5 blend that parents notice quickly: it doesn't pill. Pure cashmere, for all its beauty, can be fragile — the fine fibres work loose with friction and form pills on the surface. The high organic cotton content in our blend anchors the cashmere fibres and gives the fabric resilience. The result is a knit that holds its surface beautifully through the kind of wear and washing that children's clothing demands.

The Slow Fashion Commitment

Choosing organic is inseparable, for us, from a commitment to slow fashion. We make pieces designed to last — not one season, but several. Classic cuts that don't date. Colours that work across years and wardrobes. Construction that holds up to repeated washing and active wear.

This means we make fewer pieces than a fast fashion brand. We think about each one more carefully. And we price them honestly — reflecting the true cost of organic materials, responsible sourcing, and quality construction.

We believe parents who understand what they're buying will see the value immediately. And we believe children who wear these pieces will be more comfortable, every day, than they would be in the alternative.

The Name

MIKA & MILO are the names that started it all — the children who made us think differently about what kids' clothing could be. Every piece we make is made with them in mind: real children, living real lives, deserving real quality.

That's why we choose organic. And that's why we'll keep choosing it.
