Lightning Bolt Knitwear — A Bold Print for the Boy Who Refuses Everything
There is, in every family with a small boy in it, one drawer of refused jumpers. Soft enough. Warm enough. The right colour. Sometimes even the boy's favourite colour. None of it matters. He won't put them on.
The Lightning Bolt Jumper is the one he will.
Why a single bolt across the chest works
A four-year-old's choices are not entirely his own — he's negotiating with the version of himself he wants to be that morning. Brave. Fast. Slightly impossible. Most children's clothing doesn't engage with that at all. The piece that does — the piece with a single bold lightning bolt jacquard-knit across the chest — becomes the easy yes.
We've watched parents at our pop-ups put three or four jumpers on a small boy until the lightning bolt comes out, at which point the morning is over.
About the print
The Lightning Bolt Jumper is a single, clean, jacquard-knit bolt across the front. No words, no logos, nothing else. The bolt is built into the fabric itself — knit row by row in our 4th-generation Scottish textile studio — which means it can't peel, crack, or fade through repeated washes.
It comes in two colourways:
-
Azure — our most popular. A clean, vivid blue, the kind of colour that holds up against denim, navy, grey, and white.
-
Chalk — softer, more considered. White ground with a slate-blue bolt. Quieter, but still gets pulled on.
Both are made from our signature 95% organic cotton, 5% cashmere blend. Heavyweight enough for the playground, soft enough that nobody complains about the neckline. Machine-washable, sizes 2–10.
For boys in colder weather, the Bolt Storm Jumper extends the same print into a scattered storm pattern — same fabric, more bolts, a slightly lighter knit. We call it Bolt Storm because it's exactly that.
What it pairs with
The Lightning Bolt and Bolt Storm Jumpers wear cleanly with denim or our matching Checked Pants for a complete look. They also layer under our boys' Striped Rocket Jumper on the coldest mornings — though most boys don't actually need the second layer, they just like the look of it.
If you have a younger sibling, the Lightning Bolt also comes as a Baby Lightning Onesie — same bolt, scaled down, for 6–12M to 2Y.
A note on durability
We design the Lightning Bolt Collection assuming it will be worn through. Real childhood is hard on knitwear. The good news is every MIKA & MILO piece is Mended for Life — when it wears, we mend it free, by the same hands that knit it. Wear holes, pulled stitches, loved-through cuffs: send it back and we'll fix it.
We mention this not as a feature but because it shapes how we design. The Lightning Bolt Jumper has reinforced shoulders and ribbed cuffs that hold their shape even after a year of being pulled on and off without ceremony.
Press
The Lightning Bolt Jumper has been featured in British Vogue and Vanity Fair this year, and the wider MIKA & MILO collection has won six Junior Design Awards including three Golds. Not why we make it. But worth a quiet note.
